Hope today. Home tomorrow.
Dear Friends of Simpson Housing,
“Hobo” is a term that has been used in history to describe a single male experiencing homelessness. It conjures up an image that lingers in the minds of many regarding who is homeless today.
Our staff, volunteers, and participants know that while many people experiencing homelessness are single adult males, this is far from the whole story. Children and families continue to comprise the fastest growing sector of people experiencing homelessness. We continue to serve hundreds of single women, as well as men.
In her book Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert notes that the term “hobo” is a shortened version of “homeward bound.” We like this term much more than “homeless.” “Homeward bound” fits the vision of the families and individuals whom we serve.
It is the reason we now provide supportive housing to a total of 171 families and over 150 individuals. It is why we acquired a 17-unit apartment building, Passage Community Housing and why we extended our services to Elliot Park and ZOOM House apartments. It is why we have launched the Women’s Housing Partnership which works at placing women from our women’s shelter into permanent housing. It is why we have a savings program for our shelter guests. Many of the 114 men we moved from the men’s shelter into housing last year used the savings program to get into their new home.
Every individual person in our programs has their own story, their own history, and their own unique path to restoring their stable housing. It is our privilege to journey with each of our participants as they find hope today and their home tomorrow.
Thank you for joining us on this journey.
Sincerely,
