Soar

  Sarah
  The Soar tutoring program meets weekly with school-aged children in the Family Housing program. Sarah Ronnevik, a member of the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and the Simpson RAP Family Advocate works with KeAnna on a Language Arts activity.

  The Family Housing Summer Barbeque brings Simpson staff and family members together for an evening of food, fun and games.

  The annual Family Housing camping trip is a great opportunity for family members to get out of the city and connect with one another.
   

“Helping families succeed through parenting workshops, tutoring and recognition.”

Program Highlights:

An average of 18 parents and 45 children attended each of the monthly educational workshops. Topics included:

  • Healthy Foods and How to Shop on a Budget
  • Domestic Relationships and Family Violence
  • Setting Reasonable Limits for Your Children
  • Parenting Teens
  • Self-Esteem, Children and Families
  • Parenting Girls vs. Boys

Students who achieved 95% school attendance qualified for reward out- ings to the Park at MOA (32 students) and Valleyfair (21 students).

We assisted 16 kids in attending summer camp through transportation and coordination.

Small group outings included: a service project at a local nursing home, Disney on Ice, plays and concerts, Minnesota Twins games, The Science Museum of Minnesota, and the Children’s Theatre Company.

At the School Readiness Workshop in August, all school-aged children received a backpack filled with required school supplies. Excelsior UMC donated school supplies, and Hastings UMC donated backpacks. Sheryl B. and friends served dinner to the 123 attendees.

84 school-aged children in 55 families were assisted with additional items needed for school, including: winter coats or boots, gym shoes, school uniforms, graphing calculators, and graduation fees.
