Simpson Bright Space Project Honoring Jim Greenman:
On February 14, the children from Simpson Housing Services cut ribbons to officially open their Bright Space where they will have a dedicated, warm, enriching area to play and learn!
Thanks to staff and volunteers from seven Minnesota Full Service and Back-Up Child Care Centers at Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Walman Optical, Simpson Housing Services, and Bright Horizons Foundation for Children for making this a reality.
The Bright Space consists of four separate rooms and will serve approximately 100 children per month. In creating the spaces we are emphasizing literacy through the use of a variety of materials and equipment while providing technology for school age children to be competitive in their schools in supporting the mission of Simpson Housing Services to end the cycle of poverty through education.
The Bright Spaces were created in honor of Minneapolis native and early childhood education pioneer Jim Greenman, who was devoted to creating these spaces in Bright Horizons centers and in places serving children in need around the world.
Simpson Housing Services receives the 2009 Minnesota Nonprofit Award for Excellence in a Large Organization
We are honored to have been selected to receive the 2009 Minnesota Nonprofit Award for Excellence in a Large Organization. The award is sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) and Map for Nonprofits.
The award recognizes excellence as defined by the MCN Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence. Recipients are reviewed and selected by a blue ribbon panel of nonprofit leaders.
As a supporter of Simpson, congratulations go out to you as well. Without you, we would not be able to do what we do. Go to www.minnesotanonprofitawards.org for details on the award.

LOOKING AHEAD: Knitting hats for people who are experiencing homelessness
Once again, the Hats for the Homeless project of First Universalist Church will be collecting hand-knit hats for the guests of the Simpson Overnight Shelter. Last winter, nearly 300 hats were collected.
All knitters are invited to participate this year. The general guidelines to follow include: creating with wool for warmth and using dark colored yarn. Hats need to fit a large sized adult head and cover the ears. The deadline is December 6.
