Simpson Family Housing

We provide supportive services for families with children in both site-based and scattered-site housing settings. Participants receive a rental subsidy and meet with an advocate weekly to work on stability goals.

School-aged child in the Family Housing programs are assigned an Education Support Advocate to help ensure success in school. Families are also invited to participate int he SOAR family educational program.

We work with families whose periods of homelessness stem from challenges such as institutional racism, generational poverty, family violence, mental illness, and chemical dependency.

Overview of Family Housing programs

Transitional Housing Programs

Scattered Site Transitional Housing

Applicants must come from an emergency shelter or domestic violence shelter, or have a recent eviction notice or Unlawful Detainer and are homeless. Applicants must currently have full custody of their children or be referred by Child Protection Services for family reunification

Transitional Housing is a scattered site program in which people who are selected find their own housing and sign a lease with a landlord. Simpson pays a rental subsidy directly to the landlord each month as long as the family is in our program.

ZOOM House

Simpson works with Zion Lutheran Church to provide support services to the families living in ZOOM house, a site-based transitional housing building. A full-time family advocate provides support services to both the parents and the school-aged children.

Passage Community

In November 2007, Simpson purchased Passage Community Housing, a 17-unit apartment building providing transitional housing to families. School-aged children receive education support advocacy and families can aparticipate in workshops..

Long-term Supportive Housing Programs

Rental Assistance Program (RAP)

RAP helps qualified families remain in housing by providing rental assistance and limited support services until they are able to maintain housing on their own. Most RAP participants transition from the Transitional Housing program.

Housing First

This Hennepin County GRH program provides intensive support to families who have been homeless for one full year or homeless four times in the past three years. The head of the household must have a disability that prevents them from working.

Elliot Park Apartments

Simpson provides housing placement and intensive services to long-term homeless families in this Section 8 (a federally funded initiative that provides rental assistance to lower income households) development owned by Community Housing Development Corporation.

Family Roots Alliance

This partnership with Lutheran Social Services serves 40 long-term homeless families throughout the metro area.

Soar Family Educational Workshops

Children are the most negatively impacted by homelessness. Simpson's Soar program works with parents and children in our Transitional Housing programs to meet educational goals that they create with their advocate. Soar children receive one-on-one tutoring from our Education Support Advocates as well as from skilled Simpson volunteers. Families gather for monthly parenting workshops, educational group activities, and evenings of relaxation and fun.
