Our night shelter is volunteer-based, and provides free, safe and clean nightly shelter for adult men. The shelter is open year-round. Individuals do not have separate sleeping areas, rather there is a general sleeping area with mats spread out on the floor. Emergency shelter is provided for 46 men, seven days a week from 6:00 pm - 7:00 am.

Nurses, social worker and a psychologist are available on Thursday nights and anyone is welcome to see them.

Requirements for the evening shelter

  • Adults at least 18 years old.
  • Simpson is a wet/dry shelter.

St. Stephen's Shelter, Our Saviour's Shelter and Simpson Shelters hold a combined weekly lottery every Monday night at Simpson Shelter.

Doors open at 6 pm.
You must arrive by 6:30 pm.
Do not arrive before 5:45 pm.

There are representatives from all shelters present to staff the lottery and provide resources. Beds will be given out for 28 days (four weeks). Once a guest loses their bed, they will need to wait two week before being eligible to try the lottery again. People who are restricted from Simpson will be able to participate in the lottery by phone or will be eligible to receive a bed through the savings, pilot program or pre-treatment at St. Stephen's or Our Saviour's Shelters.

Savings Program

A second way individuals can get a bed is through our savings program. Individuals who receive a regular paycheck or SSI can choose to save 40% of each check. (They deposit this with Simpson and Simpson acts as a bank.) As long as someone is saving the 40% and actively seeking other housing options, they will get an automatic bed for an extended period of time. Simpson does not keep any of the money. When a guest secures an apartment or leaves the shelter, the money will be given to them.

The goal of this program is to give people a means to save money for housing and also to give guests time to find housing. To enter the savings program, the guest must have a current paycheck stub and 40% of the paycheck in cash. Each paycheck requires a deposit. No fee is taken from the the 40%. Guests interested in joining the savings program should come at 6:00 pm or during shelter staff office hours.
