Simpson's Transitional Housing Program

The Transitional Housing Program (TH) can serve 40 homeless families. All applicants must come from an emergency shelter or battered women's shelter, have a recent eviction notice or Unlawful Detainer. All other situations are at the discretion of the staff, (i.e. families doubled up, etc.) All applicants must currently have full custody of their children or be referred by Child Protection Services for family reunification

The Simpson Transitional Housing is a scattered site program in which people who are accepted to our program find their own housing and sign a lease with a landlord. Simpson pays a rental subsidy directly to the landlord each month as long as the family is in our program. This rental subsidy varies. Fouteen families pay 30% of their income towards rent with Simpson paying the remainder up to $500 and the family responsible for the difference. Ten families receive a $250 rental subsidy. Sixteen families pay 30% of their income towards rent. Some financial assistance may be available for move-in expenses. Clients are expected to be working or in school within 60 days of program entrance. The length of stay in the program is up to two years.

The program includes:

  • Goal-setting in order to work towards self-sufficiency; goal areas include daycare, budgeting, employment, family development and health issues.
  • Working with TH staff to obtain permanent housing during and after the TH program.
  • Meeting weekly with a case manager.
  • Attending a family program once a month that alternates workshops for the parents and activities for kids, and social activities.
  • Working with our Education Support Advocates who monitor children’s school attendance and provide assistance to families on school related issues.

Intake Process
Simpson Transitional Housing sets intake appointments as openings become available. Simpson does not maintain a waiting list. Eligible applicants may call each Tuesday between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to inquire about program openings. If there are program openings on a particular week, applicants will be asked to leave their name and phone number on our intake voice mail and will be called back if they receive an intake appointment. Instructions and a program description are given on this recording: 612.874.8683. ext. 400.

If the applicant receives an intake appointment, they will meet with TH staff to complete an application at the Simpson office. Applicants will be instructed to bring in names, addresses and phone numbers for three professional references, as well as verification of income and homelessness.

After an intake is completed, Simpson does reference and background checks. If a person is accepted into the program, they will be asked back for a second interview and will begin the housing search to enter the program.
