Overnight Shelter Volunteer
Volunteers assist shelter staff with admitting shelter guests and providing for the efficient operation of the shelter. After 10:00 pm, two volunteers manage the shelter and monitor the guests.
Responsibilities
- Aid shelter coordinator with guest check-in.
- Prepare and maintain coffee for guests.
- Answer telephones
- Distribute personal care supplies for guests as needed.
- Monitor guests from either 10:00 pm - 2:00 am or 2:00 am - 6:00 am, sleeping on the alternate shift.
- Provide wake-up calls to guests as needed.
- Prepare breakfast cart for guests.
- Ensure that guests have exited the building by 7:00 AM.
- Record disturbances, problems, and concerns on nightly report.
Qualifications
- Ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work both with staff and independently.
- Responsible, reliable, patient, and respectful.

Time Commitment
Shift is from 5:45 pm - 7:00 am
Volunteers are encouraged to serve on a regular basis to facilitate continuity within the shelter. We would welcome your willingness to commit to serve monthly or every other month. A commitment of 3 overnights is required not including a shadow shift.
Training
Tour, orientation, and training provided on-site. A two hour training is provided and a shadow overnight shift with two seasoned volunteers.
Supervisor
During your shift, you will report directly to the shelter staff member on duty. At other times, you will be in contact with the Volunteer Services Manager.
