Foundation of Women’s Housing Partnership (WHP) in place

This newly developed Women's Housing Partnership helps locate permanent housing and offers support services to homeless single adult women who are the most frequent guests at our women's shelter.

The Women’s Housing Partnership was begun with funding from the Heading Home Minnesota Partner’s Fund. Grants from the WCA and Bush Foundations are allowing for the expansion of the program.

“We believe the program to be the first of its kind in the U.S.,” says Wendy Wiegmann, Program Director for Simpson. “It follows the Housing First premise that to be housed is a basic human right that no one should be denied. First you get the person into housing, then you deal with the other issues at hand.”

Single adult women are often an overlooked demographic in the homeless community. There are few resources available, especially for women with no children. According to the 2006 Wilder Research Survey, one in three homeless women have experienced domestic abuse. 32% of homeless women report that they are homeless to escape an abusive relationship.
